How Food Intolerances Might Leave You Feeling Tired

If your body finds a particular food hard to get on with, digestion can feel like more of an effort. For some people that shows up as feeling heavy, sluggish or foggy in the hours after eating, rather than as obvious tummy upset. It’s not the same as an allergy, and it isn’t something we can promise to explain for everyone — but it’s a pattern plenty of people recognise. And because the heaviness often lags the meal by an hour or three, it’s easy to pin it on the wrong meal, or to miss the food connection altogether.

Foods that often come up include dairy, gluten-containing grains and so-called histamine-rich foods such as aged cheeses, cured meats and fermented products. That doesn’t mean these foods are a problem for you specifically — only that they’re worth a closer look if your tiredness seems to follow meals. What’s going on around the food matters too: very large portions, lots of refined carbohydrate in one sitting, not drinking enough, and poor sleep can all leave you flat after eating, quite apart from any intolerance.

How to run a focused elimination

Plan for The 6-week core plan: a structured elimination with an energy diary, then a calm reintroduction one food at a time afterwards.

  1. Pick your starting foods: use your report to choose the top 3–5 foods to look at first, starting with the ones grouped as worth exploring first.
  2. Day one: start your energy diary — meals, times, and how your energy and clarity feel through the day. It’s how patterns become visible, and the 90-day money-back guarantee asks you to follow your plan for at least 6 weeks with a food diary.
  3. Remove your chosen foods fully for the 6 weeks. Read labels carefully — hidden sources are common (dairy in bread, gluten in sauces, cured meats in ready meals).
  4. Watch the middle fortnight: many people see the clearest shift in weeks 3–4, once the diary has enough days in it to compare honestly.
  5. Afterwards, reintroduce one food at a time: eat it normally for about 3 days. If your tiredness clearly returns, that’s a strong signal it’s one for you.
  6. Leave around 5 days between reintroductions so you can see clear cause and effect, and build your own picture of which foods genuinely seem to flatten you and which are fine — some may be fine in smaller amounts or less often.

Common questions

Is feeling tired after eating always down to food intolerances?

No — and often it isn’t. Post-meal tiredness has lots of possible causes: a big dip after a carb-heavy meal, large portions, not drinking enough, poor sleep, stress, and medical causes such as low iron. If your tiredness is new, severe or ongoing, see your GP first to rule out medical causes. A food intolerance, if you have one, may be just one part of the picture.

How soon might I feel a difference after removing trigger foods?

It varies a lot from person to person. Some people notice a change within a week or two of removing a food, others sooner, and some notice nothing at all. The 6-week plan with an energy diary is what lets you judge it honestly, rather than relying on a single good or bad day.

Can the IntoleranceLab screen on its own make me less tired?

No. The screen only gives you a shortlist of foods to explore — it doesn’t change anything by itself, and it doesn’t measure tiredness. What if I remove foods and don’t feel any different?

That’s a useful answer too. Tiredness has many causes, so if elimination doesn’t change things, food may not be the main factor for you — sleep, stress, activity or a medical cause could be more relevant. It’s worth chatting to your GP about other possibilities, and also worth noticing whether anything else (like bloating) shifted, as digestion sometimes changes before energy does.

Do I have to give up these foods forever?

Usually not. The idea is to remove a few foods for the plan, then reintroduce them one by one to see which ones genuinely affect you. Plenty of people find they tolerate small amounts, or can eat a food less often without trouble. Others simply feel better without a particular food and choose to keep it occasional. It’s your call, based on what you notice.

Is this the same as a coeliac test or an allergy test?
